I attach demanding expectations to that noun. A medicine ought to have more to say than that it changes a hormone level. The question is whether it helps a particular patient problem, how much is known about harm and what supports confidence in the contents. Ipamorelin’s file does not supply that finished account.

The meal trial gives the question some weight

The early selective hormone result in rat cells, rats and pigs persuades me about selectivity because it sticks to a narrow claim. It is much more interesting than a vague promise of better everything. But the bowel-surgery trial is where enthusiasm has to meet an ordinary human outcome: being able to eat again.

The meal result stripped some glamour from the hormone peak. The trial missed its primary endpoint. The published human work does not establish the sleep, strength or fat-loss gains around which so much interest now gathers.

That leaves room for curiosity. It also leaves room for a firm refusal to borrow a benefit from an animal, a different compound or an anecdote.

Curiosity survives the failed endpoint

The detour into bowel recovery puzzles me. Why did this selective molecule head into a bowel-recovery programme, and why did the patient result fail to establish the hoped-for benefit? That is a richer subject than another catalogue of potential improvements.
